In case you forgot about Microsoft Recall, it looks like it will reappear in your Copilot+ computer soon running Windows 11.

I am sure you are all thrilled with the idea of a screenshot being taken of your screen every 3 seconds, right?

Ars Technica · That groan you hear is users’ reaction to Recall going back into WindowsBy Dan Goodin

Microsoft thinks you should recycle pcs that can't be upgraded to windows 11...

Please do not do this. Try linux or give them to someone else who will, or donate them to charitable organizations.

Goblins need spare computers everywhere!

#question
Can we have a #hashtag on here for people who wish to discard perfectly good computers, so other people on here who are less fortunate can get them and use linux or something?

Any opinioins on a best hashtag for that?

Here’s a specific question:

A friend has an autistic son about age 11. One of his special interests is building his own computers from parts. But he’s just hit the upper limit of what he can figure out on his own.

Where would you look for support? Ideally like a computer hobbyist / maker / nerd who could consult with this child and help him along? Like a build-your-own-PC tutor?

Back in the day there were “computer clubs” like the famous Homebrew Computer Club. I’m not even sure if groups like that exist anymore. 🤷‍♂️

Thank you!

31 years ago, Geir Ivarsøy and I started working on the Opera browser. A year later we founded Opera Software.

At Opera we wrote all our own code from scratch.

In 2011 I left Opera due to disagreement with investors about the direction Opera was heading.

Two years later, I co-founded Vivaldi to build a browser for you.

So I have been building browsers for 31 years. I think I know what it takes to build a browser.

Our Vivaldi team is for the most part in Norway and Iceland with a few people distributed around Europe and a couple of business people in the US.

Vivaldi is available for your computer and your phone, unless you have a very specific setup. Vivaldi might even be available for your car as well.

We go out of our way to provide you with a browser that matches your needs. I hope you like it.

This story is really worrying and concerning.

WIRED · Cybersecurity Professor Mysteriously Disappears as FBI Raids His HomesBy Dan Goodin, Ars Technica

#Computer question:

I don't know the first thing about PCs anymore. But my neighbor needs a laptop for notetaking for her new volunteer position.

She only has a desktop PC (I assume Windows) and doesn't want to learn how to use a Mac (or Linux).

She is retired and doesn't have much of a budget. I imagine $350 or so would be her top limit. Used but with software still supported would be best.

Any suggestions for what brands to look at for something affordable, portable, and easy to write with (e.g. decent keyboard and trackpad)?

I've tried cheap chromebooks (got one for my mom when she wrecked the last MacBook Air) and they basically suck IMO.

I've already shown her the remarkable2 tablet setup I have, and it's outside her budget (especially with the keyboard case). TIA

I wish there was a modifier to Tab that you could hold to jump directly to the next text input, instead of the regular jump to the next interactable element.

The number of times I have to hit Tab multiple times to get across linkes or other stuff to get to what I actually want to do is too damned high.

Linux 6.14 RC7 is out!

Linux 6.14 RC7 is now released according to this mailing list entry. This release candidate brings in some of the small bug fixes across many kernel components, as well as support for more gaming controllers, such as:

  • Support for more gaming controllers, such as ZOTAC Gaming Zone and TECNO Pocket Go.
  • Support for the Altera USB Blaster 3.
  • More Bcachefs fixes.
  • General improvements and bug fixes.

The announcement post has been made in the same commit as linked above:

Things continue to look quite calm, and I expect to release the final 6.14 next weekend unless something very surprising happens.

In the meantime, I’ve pushed out rc7, and while it all looks nice and small and safe (the biggest patches in here are some selftest updates, and a few smallish reverts – but there’s tiny noise all over the place), it would be good to get one final week of good testing in. So please give it a whirl.

We expect that the next release for the 6.14 series to be the final release which will be out on March 23rd.

Guys I've been thinking about this recently
So the telegraph has existed for a while, and became widespread in 1800s. Charles Babbage worked on the first mechanical #computers in the 1820s

What would be the earliest point in time in which a #Bitcoin like #Blockchain could've been made?

As I understand it all the system needs is a #network of computers each running a program that checks for transactions

I'm wondering if a different hash function was used it could be a lot simpler to implement into hardware, but if mechanical computing wasn't powerful enough for that the earliest might've been after WWII with the code breaking machines that the Allies invented

Any boosts would be greatly appreciated!
