"In recent years, critical data studies from the Global South have gained traction, generating debates on power, knowledge production, and the politics of data. While these discussions challenge universalist frameworks, they also risk essentializing the ‘Global South’, requiring a more nuanced approach. This special issue centres Latin America as a site of theoretical, methodological, and empirical inquiry, highlighting its potential to generate new insights into datafication, power, and artificial intelligence. Rather than treating Latin America as a passive recipient of Global North theories, this issue foregrounds its epistemological and methodological contributions to global debates. Engaging with frameworks such as capitalism, coloniality, and dependency theory, the articles explore the region's heterogeneity and intellectual traditions in social sciences, humanities, and science and technology studies. This introduction proposes a research agenda for Latin American critical data studies – one that reflects historical legacies while envisioning possible data futures through interdisciplinary and critical engagement. It interrogates the politics of knowledge production, emphasizing the need for non-extractive, dialogical approaches to studying data in, from, and with Latin America. By centering Latin American scholarship and experiences, this special issue challenges dominant narratives in critical data studies and offers alternative theoretical perspectives that are globally informed yet locally grounded."

#Trump #tarrifs forcing #Pakistan to divert hard earned cash reserves to the american regime.

Naked attempt to pause Pak's exemplary #EnergyTransition, and force us to buy American oil in a deal to have the tarrifs removed.

Why couldn't they offer us solar panels instead? Oh wait.

We have a huge American hangover. Its past time we tried "balancing" between the US and China and rework our policies to reflect a multipolar world.

#EV roll out in #Pakistan is accelerating so fast companies are clashing over distributing rights in the race to the market

profit.pakistantoday.com.pk/20

Most are #Chinese EVs, but theres a smattering of Korean & Japanese manufacturers collectively bringing tens of models to the country beginning this year

Coupled with the #Solar revolution, seems Pak might beat most of the G20 at green rollout this decade lol

Profit by Pakistan Today · Dongfeng Box EV Launched Twice in Two Months in Pakistan as Distributors Clash Over RightsA single Chinese EV hits the Pakistani market twice — now two companies are claiming it as their own.

Late #Spring in #Pakistan, & the government is already considering shutting schools for an early summer break due to the #heatwave.

Astonishing: the Gov is admitting temperature surges of 4-7C (7-13F) above the current heatwave are to occur in the coming few days.

This is what I kept warning! An avg rise of 1.5C means swings of 5-10C making that happen, and in heatwaves or cold snaps thats deadly!

@ProjectFearlessness #Pakistan replaced anywhere between 20-40% of its energy production with rooftop #solar in 2024 alone.

Its been so rapid, despite entrenched fossil lobbies, the Gov has had to cancel future coal and gas power projects, and renegotiate contracts with current ones to lower their prices or just shutter them

No amount of lobbying or narrative building can beat cold hard science and economics.

#Renewables are the future!

Interview: "What is really striking is not the sheer stupidity of it, but the wanton cruelty of it."

Poorest Countries & Global Working Class Face Worst Impacts of Trump’s Tariffs

The tariffs are especially perilous for small, heavily indebted countries in the Global South, eg, 49% for Cambodia, 37% for Bangladesh and 48% for Laos."

Democracy Now! · “Terrifying”: Poorest Countries & Global Working Class Face Worst Impacts of Trump’s TariffsBy Democracy Now!

No, you don’t want the US to collapse. Too many countries depend on it, and a sudden breakdown would create chaos. If you come from the Global South, you might feel more empathy for those harmed by American foreign policy for several decades. But if the world’s most powerful military and economy slides into dictatorship - or worse - the consequences will hit everyone, especially weaker economies and vulnerable people.

@dubh If ure too far for a connection, its physically AND financially more efficient to just produce it

Gov subsidies can be diverted to remote cases for help.

A panel is cheaper than a Km of wiring if I am not wrong. We spend billions on energy subsidies on gas and oil annually.
Just a year of these on solar/wind will be enough

Hard reform does not mean abandon reform

Replied in thread

@dubh We'll need to be very selective in whom to get to the local grid and whom to leave off.

People dont "need" to be on a grid anymore. Stand-alone off-grid installations are reliable enough to provide power. Can have a mosque (every house in #Pakistan has access to one) set up production, and all people need to do is connect a wire to it.

Replied in thread

@dubh The centralized-grid model was designed for the 20th century when cheap power meant huge power plants 100s of miles away.

The renewables era demands decentralized localized grids with energy storage. Especially with one climate disaster after another, its the only way to make supply resilient & cheap.

Mass install panels & batteries, no subsidies needed, safeguard quality of life for everyone

Replied in thread

@dubh great link, thanks!

echoes what I think is the only way forward: abandon the grid in its current form. Trying to prop-up an outdated and inefficient grid on the backs of one segment of slightly better off households, and using this as a justification for its continued existence is harmful to everyone's interests.

Cuba Sends #Doctors, the US Sends #Sanctions

The #UnitedStates calls #Cuba’s medical internationalism "human trafficking" — but it’s really an internationalist lifeline for the #GlobalSouth.

March 8, 2025

On February 25, #US secretary of state #MarcoRubio announced restrictions on visas for both government officials in Cuba and any others worldwide who are “complicit” with the island nation’s overseas #medical-assistance programs. A #USStateDepartment statement clarified that the sanction extends to “current and former” officials and the “immediate family of such persons.”

A theory of change [for the #EU, and the #GlobalSouth]: Ditch #IPlaws and #copyprotection, and set #interoperability free!!

"America's robust GDP figures are a mirage, artificially buoyed up by the monopoly rents extracted by #USBigTech, who prey on Americans AND foreigners.
But foreigners don't have to tolerate this nonsense. Governments around the world signed up to protect giant American companies from small domestic competitors (from local app stores—for phones, games consoles, and IoT gadgets—to local printer cartridge remanufacturers) on the promise of tariff-free access to US markets. With #Trump imposing tariffs will-ye or nill-ye on America's trading partners large and small, there is no reason to go on delivering rents to US Big Tech."
