Today is March 13, 2024. It’s the fourth anniversary of the world turning upside down.

Four years ago today was a Friday. At 5:30pm, when the work day ended, my staff and I packed up our desks and brought everything home. We were told that for the next couple of weeks we, meaning everyone in the entire company, would be working from home. The goal being to ride out this Covid-19 thing. Social distance, shelter in place, keep everyone healthy so that we don’t overrun the hospitals.

Today is the fourth anniversary of the start of the Covid-19 lockdown. Well, it’s the start of things for me. My wife had already been working from home for two days by that point.

Four years later and Covid-19 is still a thing. So much so that I am going to take a rapid test today to see if my sore throat is a Covid symptom or not. We’re still working from home more than not. Three days home, two days in the office. Nothing is quite back to normal, though it’s reasonably close now. At least we can go out and do stuff now, even if there’s still a chance of getting sick.

We are adjusting, I guess. It’s never going to not be a thing, but at least we’re managing.

Happy fourth Covid-aversary, folks. Celebrate by wearing a mask or something. HoHoCoughCoughCoughHo.

Beginnings

It's day 14 of this 15-day project. Let me end with this self-portrait. It captures well the mood at the end of the journey, the calmness and gravity of a new beginning, as well as the determination with which I planned to meet it.

Exiting the hotel the next day, I felt grounded, curious - and happy, of course, seeing my wife again and meeting the place I now call home.

In hindsight, the two-week transition period was a strange gift. The boredom didn't linger too long, but I kept the questions and ideas I found, the goals and plans I made. Together they gave me a lot of clarity, strength, and determination in the weeks and months to come. A few others I hold onto a bit too firmly. I had to force myself to let them go later as I learned more about what this place and chapter are about for me.

Thank you for staying with me for this experiment. I hope you enjoyed it!

Today in Labor History July 12, 1878: A yellow fever epidemic began in New Orleans, leading to the deaths of 5,000 people. 40,000 people fled the city (20% of the population), spreading the disease throughout the Mississippi Valley. 5,000 more people died in Memphis. Trade was completely halted, resulting in mass starvation and riots. Thousands more died in the state of Mississippi. Private business interests prevented reporting on the epidemic, contributing to its spread and mortality throughout the lower Mississippi basin. Citywide quarantines were implemented in many affected cities, including New Orleans and Memphis. The plague finally ended in October, when lower temperatures drove off the mosquitoes that carried the disease.

#Florida city under #quarantine after deadly #GiantAfricanLandSnail detected

Story by Katherine Donlevy, June 20, 2023

"State officials placed part of a Florida city under quarantine Tuesday as they race to eradicate the invasive, parasite-carrying invasive giant African snail.

"The 3.5-mile section of #Miramar in #BrowardCounty — located just 11 miles west of Hollywood — will be covered in a metaldehyde-based molluscicide to exterminate the insects after a giant African snail was found in the area earlier this month.

"Residents will be able to move out of the treatment area freely but are prevented from moving any plant-based supplies that could harbor the mammoth mollusk’s eggs.

“Under the quarantine, it is unlawful to move a giant African land snail or a regulated article, including, but not limited to, plants, plant parts, plants in soil, soil, yard waste, debris, compost or building materials, within, through or from the defined quarantine area without a compliance agreement,” the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services announced.

"The agency confirmed that a giant African snail — which can stretch up to 8 inches long — was spotted in the area in June, prompting an increased survey.

"Giant African snails have been contended as 'one of the most damaging snails in the world' for their threat to both agriculture and human life. The invasive Giant African land snail carried the rat lungworm parasite that can induce #meningitis in humans."

I really need to get back to recording my #Podcast.

#Quarantine did a number on my #MentalHealth, and my passion projects really suffered.

The next episode I had planned was the #Intersecionality of #Transphobia #AntiBlack #Racism and #Misogony...I want to do it as a #PanelDiscussion, though, as I am a white trans woman, and I do not experience the racism aspect.

If you are (or know) a #Black #TransWoman or #TransMan, I would truly appreciate you reaching out.
