"White House spokesperson Anna Kelly said federal workforce reductions will ensure disaster responses are not bogged down by bureaucracy and bloat."

And thanks to #APNews we get a complete explanation of how and why that is complete bullshit, sourced from experts and not an ignorant shill.

AP is a nonprofit and a thin line dividing us from becoming herded cattle. Read the story, then find the donate button and do so if at all possible.

The operators of electric grids in #NY & #NewEngland say they are still unsure whether the #tariffs apply to #electricity imports from #Canada, but they have filed plans w/ federal regulators to collect duties if they are ordered to do so. The 2 regions receive large amounts of #power from #hydroelectric #dams in Ontario & Quebec, & any tariffs would likely cause electricity bills to go up for households & businesses.

The #ColoradoRiver is shrinking due to #ClimateChange, which means the nation's 2 largest #reservoirs, #LakeMead & #LakePowell, created by #dams, have reached record low levels in recent years amid a #megadrought spanning >2 decades. If #water levels fall much lower, they could lose the ability to generate #hydropower within the massive dams that hold them back, or even lose the ability to pass water downstream.

With #Sierra snow pack at less than half of normal levels, #California Department of Water Resources announced that municipal #water agencies will receive just 20% of requested #H2O supplies, but that total is upped from 15% back on Dec. 23 rd.

Ironically Pouting #Prez #DJT's uninformed but forcefully ordered release by #NationalGuard to open #dams and release millions of gallons of water to supposedly fight the #LAfires
has further damaged state's stored agricultural supplies, and simultaneously harms survival chances of threatened aquatic life.

The majority of flow sent by Trump likely just goes to waste trapped in the middle of the state with no way to ever reach parched #SouthernCalifornia neighborhood #firehydrants.

It's one dam thing after another.

"In some communities, old dams have been removed and replaced with a series of boulders known as rock arch rapids or riffles. They’re designed to allow the river to flow more freely and fish to swim upstream. They also help avoid costly dam repairs — or worse, a collapse."

Good story, photography on dam replacement options.

Around the world, free-flowing natural rivers are being fragmented by dams, weirs and other barriers. It’s one of the biggest, yet least acknowledged, causes of biodiversity loss worldwide.

River fragmentation is a key reason migratory fish populations have declined by 81% since 1970, according to a new report by the Living Planet Index – a rate of wildlife loss six times that of animals that live on land or in the sea.

Memories of a wild time. This cartoon on the front of an old issue of #vejret ("weather" magazine of the Danish meteorological society) brought it flooding back. I remember the great storm of 1987 which the UK Met Office famously failed to forecast (but #meteoFrance did!)

Recent heavy downpours in the Lower Volta area of Ghana led to the worst flooding in the region’s history. The flooding was caused by a spillage (a deliberate release of water) from the Akosombo Dam, the country’s biggest hydroelectric dam. Over 26,000 people were displaced. No deaths have been officially announced. The last recorded spillage was in 2010.

The primary drivers of #deforestation in the #Amazon — and other biomes in #Brazil such as the #Pantanal and the #Cerrado — are #agribusiness and #meat consumption.

A survey released by the Amazon Environmental Research Institute (IPAM) showed that #cattle pastures occupied 75% of the deforested area on public lands in the Amazon. Other causes of deforestation include the construction of new highways, #logging roads, #dams, and #mines.

A much overdue #introduction:

I'm a #StructuralEngineer by day, working mostly in #steel and #concrete. I do everything, but a lot more moving #bridges and #canal locks than most. Some #dams. All my stuff is old, so it's mostly about safety and reliability.

Second job: very willing farmhand for @PickwickSheprd, who I think mostly puts up with me because she was crazy enough to marry me. We raise #sheep and she trains #sheepdogs. I fix the old #tractors and help run #fences and #buildings.

"#Iran and #Afghanistan exchanged gunfire on May 27 amid rising tensions over #water supplies in the region. The countries are engaged in a decades-long dispute over rights to the #Helmand River, on which Iran depends to #irrigate land in its arid south. The construction of #dams on the Afghan side has intensified the situation in recent years. "
