Glædelig mandag. Gingerly stepping into a new week in our fast-moving & turbulent world, wondering what it will bring. Here's a postcard from #Aarhus, just to say that I hope this week treats you well.

A winter sunrise, Aarhus, Denmark. The harbour. The sky is cloudless and pale blue with a stripe of orange on the horizon. The sea is blue-grey and gently rippling. Along the opposite piers, dark silhouettes of buildings and cranes in different shapes and heights, dominated by a 75 metre crane shaped like an angular giraffe. Sailing across the port opening, a gigantic cruise ship, one of those that has room for about 5000 guests. (No I am not endorsing cruise ships.) Dots of warm yellow light glow from windows in the cruise ship and the buildings. At our feet, in the water along the edge of the promenade, dark black rocks like ink blots.

Nostalgia pt 4: This was the second studio we had in #Bhuset at #InstitutForX the setup was pretty basic, though we did get hold of the old #soundcraft mixer used at The Danish Opera house in #copenhagen... The state of it was pretty bad, but the channels that did work sounded great👌👍😅Fun fact – we had sound engineer from Ghana, fixing it at one point. He used a magic combo of motoroil and sunscreen, which did actually work for a while... Though the smell was grim🤣😱😅

Lately I've received so many gifts, and I'm so grateful ❤️ I had a cozy time at today's monthly community dinner of activists from many different groups (next 13 april: dukop.dk/6895/ ) where someone I chatted with gifted me this origami heart note!

Yesterday, I received an amazing red hat and woven ribbon crafted by members of Gadekoret for Peace and Justice, a choir I recently joined 🕊

'Love your body'

I don't know how the guerilla artist was able to both physically and secretly hang their artwork so high up a smooth facade on a busy mid-city street, but I'm glad they did. It made me stop and look and smile.

Vielsessalen. The Wedding Room. Artist Albert Naur decorated the registry office at Aarhus Rådhus (city hall) in 1941. He painted three walls with Spring, Summer and Autumn wildflowers. After liberation in 1945, he added a single bouquet of garden flowers in the colours of the British Royal Air Force. (RAF pilots bombed Gestapo HQ in Aarhus during the Nazi occupation.)

I only learnt that this week, in these new fascist times. I thought: how moving. I thought: we’ve learnt nothing.

A section of beautiful light brown highly polished wooden wall with flowers painted on it. The smallest bouquet, sort of singled out near the middle above empty space, is delicate blooms of red, white and blue. (Some look purplish, but it’s a poor photo with shiny reflections that distort the colours.) The thin stems loosely form an A and an N, the artist’s initials. And with a bit of good will, can be seen to form IV, the roman numerals for four, and also V for 5 or for victory. On May 4th 1945, it was announced that the Nazi occupation of Denmark would end the next day, May 5th.

There are big bouquets, tiny bouquets, different colours. The marriage registrar’s podium desk with two candles on it and the few chairs in the room are lovely white wood. The photos are poor – they had to be snapped very quickly and the surfaces are highly reflective, so they do the flowered walls and room no justice. It is an incredibly beautiful and peaceful space to see and be in.

These cute plant boxes popped up recently! A campaign about air quality in 🌿

But when I scanned a QR code to learn more about the project, I got recommendations for how to reduce my exposure to bad air quality by... avoiding cars? 😅 (and nothing about improving the air quality in the city or making it easier to avoid cars 😥) It feels twisted and makes me a bit angry, even though its good advice.

I learnt about the 'open curtains and community events' retail rental clause during a free guided tour of the Aarhus Ø docklands area. The council offers local residents guided walking tours of areas in development with lots of fun and functional information about the architecture, policy thinking, urban design and future plans. I don't know if this an Aarhus thing or a Danish thing or a universal thing. I hope all cities do it, because it's an excellent thing.

The lovely huts along the lively Aarhus Ø docklands promenade are an eclectic mix: cafés, galleries, a church hall, a holiday bedsit, offices. Every business that rents one from the council is required to keep the curtains open when the property is closed (for openness; to avoid a shut-down feeling in the area) and must host 10 free community activities a year (e.g. one held a pottery workshop). Fair play to the council for human-centred, radical policy thinking.

A row of wooden huts along Bassin 7, the award-winning community promenade and bathing area at Aarhus Ø, the mixed-used docklands area developed in Aarhus, Denmark, in recent years. To our right, the sea, cranes and warehouses on the oppsotie dock, a red-and-white lifebelt. Risind behind the huts to our left, a glimpse of apartment balconies. Ahead on the same path in the distance, people walking past the end of the row of huts. ‘Huts’ is not the right word but I can’t think of the right one. They are made of black wooden planks with triangular roofs that jut out like a geometric wave. The fronts, facing the water, are pure glass so everything inside is fully visible to everyone passing. The sun can shine very strongly in and at night, with light inside, everything is exhibited, so they are allowed to close curtains if necessary when the space is in use, but must draw them back to leave a clear view in when the space is not in use.
